A study which was done on the 1,763 heterosexual couples from nine countries across the globe revealed that if a person infected by HIV infection started HIV cure when they are healthy and their immune system is healthy the chances of infecting their sex partners by more than 90 percent ( Source aids.org).
The result of the research was released earlier than the declaration date due to significant finding about the decreased chances of HIV infection in partners. The research confirmed the belief of many physicians that if the HIV treatment is started earlier in infection phase can limit the rates of HIV transmission of the virus that causes aids.
The research was carried out Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases university of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The lead researcher Dr. Myron Cohen Said "We set out to prove that if you took earlier HIV Treatment you could benefit your own health and you could prevent the transmission of HIV".
"Both of these hypotheses are proved right".
The study which was done in 2005 divided the couples in two groups' one group started taking HIV cure medicine immediately while the other group delayed the HIV treatment until their CD4 T cells count a test to measure immune health system - either dropped below 250 or an AIDS related disease sets in.
Counseling was provided to these groups about the safe sex, free condoms, treatment for sexually transmitted infections, regular HIV testing was done. Trial was conducted in United States, Botswana, India, Kenya, South Africa, Thailand and Zimbabwe at 13 different sites in these nine countries.
Preliminary findings from the genetically collected data find out that out of the selected volunteers 96% of new infections in the partners occurs in those patients who do not start the ANTI HIV treatment and does not take their ANTI HIV drugs immediately after the infection.
Dr Alexis Powell of university of Miami said that it is very heart warming sign and the evidence has emerged that clearly shows that starting treatment in earlier stages of HIV not only is beneficial to the HIV positive but also for the sexual partners who are HIV negative.
Higher costing of drugs, regulation by insurance companies are few barriers and hindrance that delays the ANTI HIV medications in patients in initial phase of infection. Another barrier that is major concern for the doctors' world wide some of the people who are diagnosed initially refuse to take the medicine thinking that they have to take the medicine rest of their life some of them are very concerned with the side effects of the medications that they are taking, wile few of them do not trust the medical system.
Thus stressed is laid to the patients to start their treatment immediately once they are diagnosed with HIV. Starting the treatment earlier reduces the risk of chances of infection to your partner until unless you are taking proper medication. But all the people should always remember that study does not mean that people do not take precaution during sex and should always practice safe sex and they should use condoms to protect themselves and their sexual partners.
